In history we've known that this special day is held every year on 10 November to commemorate the Battle of Surabaya between Indonesian nationalists and allied militia, which is the first large-scale armed conflict between Indonesia and foreign troops after the Declaration of Independence of Indonesia on August 17, 1945.
On November 10 morning, the British army deploying about 30,000 troops, 50 aircraft and a large number of warships. Various parts of the city of Surabaya bombarded with bombs, fired indiscriminately with cannon from the sea and land. Thousands of people were affected, many died and many more were injured. However, resistance fighters also raged throughout the city, with the active assistance of the residents.
Surabaya battle, which later became a Heroes Day, not only because so many heroes who have sacrificed themselves for the sake of the Republic of Indonesia. Besides all, the meaning of the battle Surabaya greatness also lies in the role and influence, the course of the revolution time. Battle of Surabaya has been able to mobilize the masses to participate, either actively or passively, in the struggle against the common enemy that time.
Battle of Surabaya also has spread to the far areas in Indonesia, republican consciousness, patriotism is high, arms solidarity among various races, religion, ancestry. The effect is like a big flame that burns the spirit of resistance that appears also fighting in many places in Indonesia.
Although I'm not in social department in my high school, today is Indonesia's special moment, and I'm proud to be Indonesian :)
